Employer Managed Health \ imp · loi · yer ma · nijd helth \
1.) A condition which results when the firm that employs a worker actively manages that worker's health care benefit; 2.) An approach undertaken by self-funded firms when they finally tire of failed cost control measures and exorbitant third party intermediary fees; 3.) The natural response of employers to the current market conditions that promote increasing health care costs without any relation to performance or value.
Employer Managed Healthcare is an important and growing response to the crisis in the provision of health benefits to America's workforce.
This is a response by self-funded firms who are addressing the components of the health care system exactly as they would with any component of production – on a "make-or-buy" basis. Often, they find that the local suppliers (hospitals & doctors) are so inadequate and out of touch with their needs and that of their work force that the answer is simple – make the health care on-site.
As businesses turn to on-campus primary care, direct contracting for hospital services and self-administration of disease management programs, they are working through an important learning curve. There is a focus on addressing the actual value proposition of employee health and health risk management, without relying upon the vendors' and their interpretation. There is no middleman defining the issues or the network or the way in which the system will be designed. For the employers choosing this model, the advantages go far beyond cost savings and extend to employee satisfaction and productivity.
To date, there has never been a meeting of employers who are direct providers of health care services to their own installed employee base. This is the first opportunity for medical directors and health benefit managers in this unique group to "talk shop" and to network and to share ideas about this important new trend in aggressive benefit re-design.
